I’ve scoured all of the internet resources to find the best advice for finding a new roommate and suggestions on where to do it. Honestly, there really isn’t much info out there. There are different variations of Craigslist out there to help you look, but they’re either full of ads, or you have to pay for them. I’ve had my best luck with Craigslist so far. And believe me, we have become best friends. I check it probably every fifteen minutes, and that isn’t an exaggerations. Its awkward that I’m not getting there until October 4. This makes it so that I’m unable to join a lease on the first. But don’t think that has stopped me from reaching out to people. Some have responded, some haven’t. I’m going to be there in less than two weeks with my two suitcases, and I don’t have a place to live. Thankfully I have a friend who is letting me stay with her for a little. But who knows how long that will be. I still am not really sure what I can afford since I don’t really know how much it costs to live out there. I’m not sure what taxes will be like, what groceries will cost, and most importantly, what alcohol will cost. We found a new person to replace me in my current apartment, so that is an extra $1200 I’ll have next month for a down payment. So many of these places want first and last months’ rent PLUS a month’s rent for a security deposit. When the average room I’ve been looking at is about $1300, that is almost four grand to move into an apartment! I’m going to have to save every penny from my first pay checks at my new job to cover that spread, so that I can move into my “cozy” room with no closet and one tiny window. I’m going to love New York City!
